Former President John Dramani Mahama has repeated his call for a stakeholders conference to address the challenges facing the implementation of the Free Senior High School programme.
Addressing students at the Nyankpala Campus of the University for Development Studies on Tuesday, Mr Mahama said if questions are not raised over the government’s poor implementation of Free SHS, it will destroy the quality of secondary education in Ghana.
Mr Mahama told the students that his call is consistent with those made by other Ghanaians, including Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is also the President’s cousin.
He said despite the free SHS being the government’s answer to every question, it has still failed to properly implement the programme.
“A new NDC government will improve the Free SHS programme and make it better by abolishing the current shift (double track) system and re-introduce the more efficient three terms per academic year programme. We will also bring back the emphasis on skills training, technical and vocational education to provide students with more options, as they go forward with their choices in diverse career and aptitude paths”, Mr Mahama said.
The former President said this in a release signed by his spokesperson James Agyenim-Boateng.
