Women Commissioners from various tertiary institutions were put together to appear on GTV Breakfast physically and virtually to present their thoughts on how the ailing Ghanaian economy can be salvaged.

The Universities represented among the lot in Ghana were the University of Ghana, University for Development Studies (UDS), Ghana Institute of Journalism(GIJ), Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and University of Mines and Technology (UMaT). UMaT was represented by Priscilla Agyeman Duah, KNUST by Maud Owusu Asare, GCTU by Lillian Seli Awuni, Grace Quainoo University of Ghana, and UDS Tamale Campus by Niamatu Alhassan.

Speaking on varied areas of development, i.e education, revenue generation and illegal mining, the ladies recommended for their educational curriculum in tertiary institutions to be more practical based than theory to promote self-employment due to the lack of job opportunities.

They said access to grants for businesses by graduates when they are not gainfully employed is difficult to come by.

They added that boosting manufacturing and production of consumables heavily relied on by Ghanaians will cut imports and boost the local economy.

The ladies agreed that the fight to end illegal mining, popularly called “Galamsey” does not seem near in sight because some politicians, under the guise of owning and operating small-scale mining concessions, mine illegally.

This panel discussion is one of two parts which will see Women Commissioners have their turn as well as Students Representative Council Presidents, after which a document on their recommendations will be presented to Parliament for onward review.
