The Minister of Sanitation, Madam Cecilia Dapaah has expressed Ghana’s willingness to tap into India’s experience in dealing with sanitation and how to use energy from the sun to pump water for rural communities.
According to the Minister, as the world inches towards achieving the Sustainable development Goals, SDGs, it is necessary to take advantage of available experience so that Ghana is not left out in the global development agenda.
Madam Cecilia Dapaah was speaking when the Indian High Commissioner to Ghana Birender Singh Yadav paid a courtesy call on her to invite her to the 180th anniversary of Mahatma Ghandi.
Ghana like many African countries is still grappling with sanitation issues and provision of potable water for citizens, especially those in rural communities.
With a population of almost 28 million, more than five million still engage in open defecation despite efforts by government to improve the situation.
India on the other hand has a population of more than one billion, but attained 85 percent sanitation coverage, a feat that has been lauded by the World Health Organisation.
According to the Minister of Sanitation, Madam Cecilia Dapaah, Ghana has a lot to learn from the Indian experience.
The Indian Ambassador to Ghana, Birender Singh Yadav said the invitation to Mahatma Ghandi’s 180th anniversary is in line with Mr. Ghandi’s passion for improved sanitation.
He said issues of sanitation will be topical during the celebration which will include conferences.
