Government has allocated 13 million Ghana Cedis for the construction of footbridges along the Madina- Adentan Highway next year.

This comes after residents of Madina, Adentan and its environs in Accra have sent a notice to stage a demonstration to register their displeasure with government’s failure to complete footbridges on the roads.

The situation has led to needless loss of lives, especially pedestrians who get knocked down by vehicles while crossing the six-lane road.

Speaking on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme “Behind the News”, a Board Member of the Ghana Highways Authority, Senyo Hosi said the money will help complete the footbridges to help save lives.

The reconstruction of the 5.6 km road from Madina-Pantang, including the footbridges, is being funded by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), Saudi Fund for Development and the government of Ghana at the cost of GH¢38.6 million.

Pedestrians and commuters who use the Atomic Junction-Pantang highway scale the concrete walls which divide the lanes (median) to cross the road.

Apart from the difficulties associated with crossing the road, many others have lost their lives as a result of accidents.
