Hajia Ramatu, Wife of Former Veep Aliu Mahama laid to rest in Tamale

The former Second Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Hajia Ramatu Aliu Mahama has been laid to rest in accordance with the Islamic tradition. She was buried beside her Late husband, Alhaji Aliu Mahama at their residence at Kalpohini in the Tamale Metropolis. Family members, sympathizers, and well-wishers who eulogized her described the late Hajia Ramatu Mahama as a mother to all and a great source of inspiration.

The late wife of the Former Vice President was an Educationist. Due to her love and care for her pupils, she earned the coveted title “Mma Ramatu”.

Hajia Ramatu Mahama was the daughter of the late Imoro Egala, a Minister for Trade and Industry and the first indigene to become Chairman of COCOBOD, in the First Republic and a long-standing political stalwart in Ghana through to the third Republic; doubling as a founder of the PNP now PNC.

Hajia Ramatu fondly referred to as Neè Egala, had been battling a heart-related sickness for about two years now and was taken to the United Kingdom for treatment last year.

She returned to Accra, four months ago but her condition worsened this week and she was admitted to the Korle Bu Teaching hospital, where, she later died on Wednesday, April 07, 2022.

The body of Hajia Ramatu was received by the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, at the Tamale Airport.

It was later sent to the Tamale Jubilee Park where the Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Ahmed Abdul Salam, and some Islamic clerics prayed the Islamic prayers.

The body was later transported to the residence of the late Aliu Mahama where Islamic rites were performed before it was buried.

 In attendance were the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and his wife, Samira Bawumia, Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, General Secretary of NPP, John Boadu, and other party members.

Son of the Late second lady, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, who is also the MP for Yendi, thanked Allah for the life of his mother. He said Hajia Ramatu has played her role in serving both Allah and humanity.

“My mother was not just my mum, she was a mother to everybody, she was an angel brought into this world to serve”, he said.

“In all her life she has worked selflessly for people, imparting knowledge on people and being prayerful,” he noted.

The Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr. Mohamed Amin Adam, the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Nashiru Issahaku, and the Chief of Pishegu Alhassan Andani all took turns to eulogise the late Vice President Aliu Mahama’s wife.

The late Hajia Ramatu Mahama left behind four children; Salma Mahama, Farouk Mahama, MP for Yendi, Fayad Mahama, and Halim Mahama.  She was 70 years old.

Meanwhile, a solemn Islamic funeral ceremony was held for Hajia Aliu Mahama at the Independence Square in Accra before the body was transported to the Northern Region for burial.

It was graced by dignitaries including Former President Kufuor who said he enjoyed great support from the late Ramatu Aliu Mahama who discharged her duties with excellence and did not cause any scandals during his administration.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor made the point in a tribute to the memory of the late Ramatu Aliu Mahama, who was the wife of the late Vice President Aliu Mahama, during his(Kufour), administration, 2000 – 2008.

“She was very gracious, intelligent, and motherly and was aware of the weight of the office in which she discharged duties with such excellence. She was a good human being. There were no scandals at least from her quarters,” he said.
