Private legal practitioner and Executive Director of Lands and Mines Watch Ghana, Kwame Owusu Danso, has called for a change in how Members of Parliament approach their responsibilities, arguing that MPs must represent all constituents regardless of political affiliation.
Speaking on Prime Morning today, Mr. Owusu Danso said there is a growing perception that MPs elected in constituencies considered strongholds of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are accountable only to supporters of those parties.
“The presumption that once I am an MP in a constituency that appears to be NPP or NDC, it means I am only representing NPP or NDC people. That must change,” he said.
He stressed that the constitutional mandate of an MP is to serve everyone within the constituency, not just individuals who share the same political colours.
According to him, the perception that MPs serve only party supporters undermines public trust in Parliament and discourages participation from voters who feel excluded.
He added that when MPs engage only with their political base, it deepens partisan divisions and weakens the relationship between citizens and the legislature.
