Some supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya West constituency in the Central region of Ghana, have clashed over the construction of a bridge at the Awutu Akomatom community.

The clash between the supporters of the two political parties was a result of who was responsible for the construction of the bridge. But for the timely intervention of the police the issue will escalate further.

According to the Awutu Senya West constituency chairman of the NPP, Mr. Paul Aidoo, the residents of Akomatom appealed to his party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, who doubles as the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr. Eugene Arhin, who visited the area.

“We were in the community on Sunday to campaign and they told us that they needed a bridge. We began the processes to get the construction underway, and all of a sudden, the NDC are here claiming to be doing same. The people would have told us that the NDC had promised to construct the bridge if they had indeed visited and made promises. Gizella Tetteh is the MP, and she has not constructed the bridge for them, but why is she promising to do it now?” one NPP supporter retorted.

The NDC supporters on the other hand say they engaged with the community some weeks ago regarding the construction of the bridge, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Madam Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, made commitments in the form of cement to commence the construction this week, only to see supporters of the 2024 NPP’s parliamentary candidate at the site to commence construction.

“The MP engaged the community of Akomatom during a community durbar and promised to embark on the construction of the bridge. She even gave the community 20 bags of cement, so I don’t know why Eugene Arhin is doing that, knowing very well that Gizella has started,” an NDC supporter said.
