The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), held parliamentary primaries for constituencies where there are sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) yesterday Saturday, January 27th, 2014.
The parliamentary elections were held in 105 constituencies across the country and supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC).
The parliamentary primaries recorded a major upset at the end polls. Some key ministers, deputies ministers of state, government spokespersons and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of some state institutions lost their bids to secure their ticket to represent the NPP during the upcoming general elections.
For instance, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Freda Prempeh, a third-term MP, was ousted in the Tano North constituency.
Her challenger Dr. Gideon Boako who doubles as the spokesperson for the Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured a decisive victory with 444 votes against Prempeh’s 221.
In the Abuakwa North constituency, there was a change of guard as incumbent MP and deputy Education Minister, Madam Gifty Twum-Ampofo narrowly lost to Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong, popularly known as “Buffalo,” who garnered 222 votes compared to Twum-Ampofo’s 202.
Again the Deputy Minister of Health, Madam Tina Gifty Mensah, faced an unexpected defeat in the Weija Gbawe constituency, losing to the CEO of the Coastal Development Authority, Jerry Ahmed Shuaib, who polled 786 votes to Mensah’s 361.
Minister for Public Enterprises, Joseph Cudjoe, also succumbed to a loss in the Effia primary in the Western Region, falling to financial analyst Isaac Nyarko Boamah.
