The Criminal Offences (Amendments) Bill 2020 has been passed. With the amendment, corruption has been made a felony instead of a misdemeanour with a minimum sentence of 12 years and a maximum of 25 years.
Attorney General and Minister of Justice Gloria Akuffo moved the motion for the second reading of the Bill.
Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Ben Abdallah seconded the motion and presented the Committee’s report.
Ranking Member on the Committee, Inusah Fuseini said the amendment seeks to criminalize corruption which is currently a misdemeanour to a felony in line with international conventions.
Member of Parliament for Wa West, Joseph Yileh Chireh said MPs who are on the campaign trail should have been present since elements of the Bill concern influencing voters.
After the debate, the motion was adopted and the Bill read the third time and passed.
