The transitional authorities in Mali have been asked to respect the date announced for elections to ensure the credibility of the process. An ECOWAS mission led by Former Nigerian President Good luck Jonathan stated this after a visit to Mali.

A statement by ECOWAS said the team which visited Mali from 5th to 7th September 2021 included Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway.

The mission was to review the transition process, particularly progress towards elections scheduled for February 2022. It appreciated the renewed expression of the transitional authorities to respect the agreed deadline of the transition before the International Community.

However, the Mission is concerned about the lack of concrete action in the effective preparation of the electoral process. The Transitional government was encouraged to urgently develop priority actions for holding the presidential and legislative elections.

These include consensus on the legal framework for the elections, the establishment of the voters’ register, and the bodies that will conduct the elections.

The Mission urged the socio-political actors to work together and demonstrate their sense of responsibility during this delicate Transition to ensure the process becomes successful.
