The main water treatment plant in Harare Zimbabwe has been closed down due to shortage of foreign currency.

Deputy Mayor, Enock Mupamawonde has described the situation as devastating.

He appealed to the government to make enough foreign currency available to purchase chemicals for the treatment plant.

The state-owned media have blamed the opposition Movement for Democratic Change for the shutdown.

There are reports of increased cases of diarrhoea in Harare and many fear the consumption of untreated water could lead to further outbreaks of cholera or typhoid.
