Athletes are gearing up for preparations ahead of the big opener of athletic games, which will commence on Monday, March 18, 2024, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. Although some of the various sports disciplines slated for the African Games have started, sports fans are still in anticipation for the athletics to start.

Counties including The Gambia, South Africa, South Sudan, and host nation Ghana were all in full action at the University of Ghana training pitch as they trained intensively to make a mark on the opening day of games for athletics.

GBC Online engaged some athletes and coaches, notably the coach of The Gambia, Mariama M. Salah, who boldly backed her team, describing how well-drilled and prepared they are for the task ahead.

Mariama stated that her strong delegation of eight athletes will give their best in the opening game, as they are ready and prepared to execute their skills and techniques on the track without any pressure or fear.

“We have the defending champion of the 200 metres, and that is Mariam Gina Bass. With her preparation this year, it’s believed she will retain her 200-metre title. I know she may not want to lose that one again. In the 100 metres in Morroco, she won silver, and I know she will go for gold in Ghana,” said Mariama. M. Salah.

She also emphasised their ambition to do well in Ghana in order to secure a spot at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

She outlined that her team will be very eager to make that happen, especially as they play their qualification cards in Ghana, a rich African soil country.
