Coach Nora Hauptle names Black Queens squad ahead of Zambia showdown

By Nana Kwame Bediako

Coach Nora Hauptle announced the squad for the third round of Olympic Games qualifiers against Zambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, February 23, 2024.

The Black Queens have been arguably the best national side in the country since last year (2023). Their performance in these few months has been outstanding, earning them a ticket to this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Players like Doris Boaduwaa, Anasthesia Achiaa, and Portia Boakye have been named in the squad based on their consistency in the national team after playing a vital role in qualifying Ghana for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Charlton Athletic Women midfielder Freda Ayisi, after some impressive performances with her club side, has earned her first Black Queens call-up. The 29-year-old has been a joy to watch in the English women’s league. Freda caught the attention of coach Nora with her consistent performances with Charlton.

A crucial member of the Black Princesses squad, Mafia Nyame, also made a cut in Nora’s final squad ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers in France. Mafia was instrumental in the Princesses charge to qualify for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

The Queens will open camp on Sunday, February 18, 2024, with preparation geared towards their encounter with Zambia, with the first leg match slated for Friday, February 23, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium and the return leg moving to Zambia on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
