Former President of the Ghana Football Association, Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe says Ghana’s economy needs to grow to a certain level before it could be competitive with other nations with regard to football. He however called on the Government to continue supporting Ghana Football Clubs, but to make sure that all monies are accounted for.
“Until we develop our economies in Africa to such a level that it will be competitive to other advanced nations, definitely governments should continue sponsoring football clubs in Africa but I think governments posing money should be properly accounted for”.
He added that if the Government wants results, football activities must be well sponsored. the need to really sponsor football activity. He cited Kwame Nkrumah, General Acheampong and others who sponsored the FA and it helped in earning us some trophies.
“Governments should put lot of money into the FA if they really need results but keep away from the FA so that the FA can be run by the people who have been appointed”
Responding to football sponsorship in Africa, Dr. Nyaho said companies that sponsor football activities must increase the funding but was quick to add that governments should also know that these companies want results if they are going to put in money to sponsor football activities.
“I also think that small companies in the various African countries that have sponsoring must increase the money they put into football. As companies they want results if they put in money and we have to let our people understand that if we don’t partner such companies, we won’t get anywhere at all with football”
With the kind of economy Ghana has, putting in perspective all other African Nations, it has to be improved saying that the bigger portion lies on the shoulders of the government in power and then be able to compete with the developed countries according to Dr. Tamakloe
“With the sort of economy, we have right now, where virtually all nations are down, we need to improve the economy and then after that I think we can compete easily with the other countries”, he said.
