Ghana’s Joseph Paul Amoah, Ibrahim Fuseini, Janet Mensah, and Solomon Hammond have advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s and women’s 200m events after qualifying in the heats.
Amoah made a time of 20.91s, while Ibrahim Fuseini made 21.02s to win their respective heats.
Hammond finished second behind Zimbabwe’s Methuleka Makusha in Heat 9. He made a time of 21.32s to reach the semis, which will be run later on Thursday evening.
Janet Mensah went through the first round of the women’s 200 metres with ease, winning Heat 4 in a time of 23.75s, ahead of Gabon’s Moulin Pierrick, who finished 24.24s, and Sierra Leone’s Giorgina Sesey, who also finished 24.33s, and South Africa’s Whitney Shabangu, who finished at 24.51s. They all qualified for the semis.
Earlier on Wednesday evening, in the 4x100m relay, Ghana finished 2 seconds behind Nigeria. Amoah and Hammond won silver.
The Ghanaian male athletes will have to work hard to redeem themselves in the 200m final.
Solomon Hammond will compete in the first semi-final at 5:10 pm, and then at 5:15 pm, Joseph Paul Amoah and Ibrahim Fuseini will run together in the second semis.
Janet Mensah is scheduled to compete in the first semi-final of the women’s 200m event at 4.45 p.m..
