The newly appointed registrar of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Yaa Amankwah Opuni, is confident sports will improve the mental health of students. She said sports will “help students’ educational process and progress”.

Miss Yaa Amankwa Opuni said this when UHAS hosted the 10KM Cross Country Competition of the 25th Ghana University Games Association (GUSA) Games in Ho.

It’s a great pleasure to host the 25th GUSA Cross Country. The university’s motto is health for development. It sinks well with the university’s motto. As an institution, we believe that sports improve mental health and will help students’ educational process and progress. That is why we have invested so much in this competition.

As a university, we are glad to have hosted this year’s competition and given all the support that is necessary to the participating universities,Ms. Opuni said.

UHAS through its School of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SSEM), hosted this year’s GUSA Cross Country Competition, while Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), will host the main event, which comprises other sporting disciplines.

“The school (SSEM) has done so well in bringing this competition to the university; indeed, it is through their effort and collaboration and networking that we see what we see here today. Without the school of Sports and Exercise Medicine playing a pivotal role, we wouldn’t have hosted this year’s cross country competition.”

“We are happy that the universities came to enjoy the serene atmosphere in the Volta Region,” she said.

Eight (8) universities out of the fourteen (14) universities that will compete in the GUSA Games later in November took part in the cross country competition for both men and women.

In the overall results for men, the University of Ghana (UG), amassed 47 points to become first against the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and the University of Cape Coast (UCC), who finished the competition second and third with 88 and 94 points respectively.

In the women’s category, the University of Cape Coast finished first with 53 points, ahead of the University of Education, Winneba(UEW), and the University of Development Studies (UCC), which came second and third, finishing the race with 65 and 118 points respectively.

The University of Cape Coast received a trophy as the overall Women’s champion with 53 points.

However, in the individual race, Ghana’s representative for cross country at the just-ended Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and long-distance runner, William Amponsah of UEW, won the 10km race, clocking 29.17s.

Sarah Koomson of the University of Development Studies (UDS), made a time of 35.25s to finish first in the women’s race.

This is the first time UHAS is hosting the competition of the GUSA Games. The university is hopeful of hosting the entire sporting event in subsequent editions when the right resources are in place.

“As a university, we are in the process of having a sports complex, and if the sports complex comes to fruition, we will be able to host national events.”

“We are preparing ourselves to host national events and be able to host the entire GUSA Games when we have fulfilled all righteousness shortly,” Ms. Opuni added.

The Cross Country Competition was held under the distinguished patronage of Prof. Lydia Aziato, the Vice Chancellor, UHAS; Harry Tabor, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, UHAS; and Miss. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni-Registrar, UHAS.

The upcoming GUSA Games will be held in Kumasi from November 4th to November 19, 2022 at the KNUST Campus, and it will be the 27th edition.
