SuperSport will not broadcast AFCON 2023

By Nana Kwame Bediako

MultiChoice on Wednesday, 3rd January, 2024 announced their unableness to acquire the broadcasting rights to telecast the AFCON 2023.

The South African company controls the operation of DSTV, a reliable television service which has most of the Sports Stations, notably SuperSport.

SuperSport, a station most football fans were expecting to get all the full Afcon experience from the comfort of their homes, eventually has been affected by the rights lost by their mother broadcasting network, MultiChoice.

“SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament. However, it noted the games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels”; Multi Choice mentioned in their statement.

MultiChoice losing the rights to broadcast the AFCON 2023 serves as a huge blow to its cherished customers since it started broadcasting the tournament from the early 90’s.

The announcement has left some customers of the company on where to turn to for the AFCON games.

The 34th edition of the AFCON which is powered by TotalEnergies will be hosted in the Western part of Africa on the prestigious soil of Côte d’Ivoire. The tournament will kick off from 13th January 2024, with the finale scheduled for 14th February 2024.
