An energy expert, Dr. Yussif Suleimana, says increasing Ghana’s power generation mix is essential to the country’s energy security. However, the present effort to add nuclear to the generation mix is somewhat not appropriate economically.

Speaking with GBC News in Accra, Dr. Suleimana noted that Ghana is presently generating excess power for domestic use and for export. Therefore there is no pressing need to go nuclear.

Nuclear energy comes from splitting atoms in a reactor to heat water into steam, turn a turbine and generate electricity without carbon emissions because reactors use uranium, not fossil fuels. Some developed nations have relied on nuclear to power their economies. Like any other system, nuclear has its advantages and weaknesses.

Ghana has for years been making efforts to add nuclear to the national power generation mix. For the past few years, vigorous efforts are been made by the Atomic Energy Commission, Nuclear Power Authority and sister agencies. How the Institute for Energy Security, IES says generating electricity from wind and solar is more economical than nuclear.

To this end, it is reiterating its advice to the government to halt its efforts to generate electricity using nuclear.
