Instagram has begun rolling out a dislike button for comments as part of efforts to improve conversations on the platform.
The feature, which appears as a down arrow next to comments, allows users to privately signal comments they find unpleasant, irrelevant or unhelpful. It is being introduced across both Feed posts and Reels.
Unlike traditional dislike systems, Instagram will not display a public dislike count, and users will not be notified if someone dislikes their comment.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the feature is intended to help create a friendlier environment in comment sections.
“Some of you may have seen that we’re testing a new button next to comments on Instagram,” Mosseri said in a post on Threads.
“This gives people a private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment.”
He added that dislikes could eventually influence how comments are ranked, with heavily disliked comments appearing lower in discussions.
Reports about the feature first emerged in 2025, when Instagram confirmed it was testing the tool with a small group of users. Recent reports indicate the rollout has now expanded more widely, although the company has not confirmed whether it is yet available to all users globally.
The move reflects broader efforts by social media platforms to reduce toxic interactions and improve user experience online.
Platforms including YouTube and TikTok have also introduced forms of private dislike or downvote systems for comments.
