May Day Celebrations in Tamale: Hundreds of unions march to mark day

Hundreds of worker’s unions from Northern, North East and Savannah regions converged on Jubilee Park in Tamale to mark the May Day event.

 The various working groups marched and carried placards some of which read,” Stand up for your right”, “stop politicizing public service”, “dumsor must stop”, ” We need free and fair elections “, and “we need peace before, during and after the general elections” among others. 

The Northern Regional Secretary of TUC, Felicia Kraja,  who stood in for the National Secretary,  said in spite of the existence of relatively strong institutional and legal frameworks for industrial relations, many Ghanaian workers still suffer wrongful terminations and dismissals,  are not allowed to exercise their constitutional right to form or join trade unions of their choice while too many workers suffer injuries and death at their work places. This, she said calls for a collective effort of labour unions to protect the interest of workers.  

Mrs. Kraja called on the security, workers Union, religious leaders and civil service organizations to continue to preach peace to their followers especially as the heat of the electioneering campaigns will highten soon. 

The Northern Regional Minister,  Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, saluted all workers for their immerse contributions towards the socio-economic development of the Northern , North East and Savannah regions. He said the theme for this year’s celebration is in the right direction considering the role each and every has to play to ensure a peaceful elections come December 7th. 

Some workers who distinguished themselves over the years, were honored with awards and citation.

The Theme for the event is, “Election 2024: The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development”.
