US President-Elect Joe Biden will take office today as the 46th President. Mr. Biden served as Senator for 36 years before becoming Vice-President to Former President, Barack Obama from 2008 to 2016.

Ahead of Mr. Biden’s inauguration, Washington is under heavy security following the Capitol riots, with thousands of soldiers from the National Guard deployed while metal fences have been put up around the White House.

Only a limited number of people will be at the National Mall to witness Mr. Biden’s inauguration, in contrast to the hundreds of thousands who usually attend.

One person whose absence will be conspicuous at today’s swearing-in is out-going President Donald Trump.

He is expected to fly to Florida this morning meaning he will be the first president to skip his successor’s inauguration since Andrew Johnson in 1869.
