About sixteen thousand dollars ($16,000) of counterfeit notes have been seized in Mozambique. Investigators suspect a regional syndicate is behind the printing of the fake currency.

Police say they have arrested two Angolans, saying arrest warrants for other suspects will be issued. They added that Mozambican, Angolan and South African nationals are also suspected to be part of a currency-forging syndicate despite their failed attempt to forge Mozambique’s metical.

The detained Angolans have denied any wrongdoing. One of them said he was a businessman who entered Mozambique legally 2 months ago to look for business opportunities, and had no idea why he got arrested.
