A 31-year-old California man is in custody after allegedly opening fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night. President Donald Trump, addressing reporters from the White House briefing room, stated the suspect was “armed with multiple weapons” when he charged a security checkpoint. Trump was rushed off the stage of the Washington Hilton hotel ballroom seconds after the sounds of gunfire sent attendees diving under their tables. The President confirmed the gunman was “taken down” by U.S. Secret Service agents after a violent confrontation. He noted that while he is concerned about such violence, he cannot be too worried because being president is “a dangerous profession.”

Assault on a Security Checkpoint

Gunfire erupted at approximately 8:35 p.m. as guests were finishing their first course. Witnesses reported hearing at least five shots from the rear of the Washington Hilton ballroom. The shots rang out several minutes after White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang delivered remarks. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was outside the ballroom and witnessed the gunman opening fire just a few feet away before taking cover. A source briefed by the Secret Service confirmed a man armed with a shotgun approached the metal detectors and was engaged by security. Trump later remarked that he initially thought the sound was “a tray that clattered on the ground” before he and First Lady Melania Trump were “whisked away.”

Status of the Wounded Officer

One Secret Service agent was struck during the exchange of gunfire but has since been released from the hospital. Trump noted the officer was shot at a “very close distance” with a “very powerful gun,” but was “saved by the fact that he was wearing obviously a very good bulletproof vest.” Following the incident, the president met with the wounded agent to offer support. “I just spoke to the officer, and he’s doing great,” Trump said. He added that law enforcement officials told the agent “we love him and respect him,” describing him as a “very proud guy” who is “very proud of what he does.”

Identification of Cole Thomas Allen

Federal authorities have identified the suspect as Cole Thomas Allen of Torrance, California. Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll stated that Allen was a guest at the Hilton and that police have “secured a room” at the hotel for investigation. Carroll confirmed the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. Public records and academic materials reveal Allen is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) with a degree in mechanical engineering and worked as a teacher and video game developer. FEC records also show Allen donated $25 to Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in October 2024.

Investigation and Federal Charges

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that Allen will remain in custody until his Monday arraignment. He faces federal charges including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer. Meanwhile, FBI agents have secured a perimeter around a residence in Torrance. Before his press conference, Trump, via his Truth Social account, shared pictures apparently showing the alleged shooter after he was subdued, as well as security footage of the incident. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that investigators are looking “thoroughly” into the suspect’s background, while Mayor Muriel Bowser noted there is “no reason to believe at this time that anyone else was involved.”

Evacuation of High-Profile Guests

The shooting prompted a massive security response to protect the high-ranking officials in attendance. Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. were all successfully evacuated. Trump reported that First Lady Melania Trump and all Cabinet members “are in perfect condition.” The president said he “fought like hell” to stay at the dinner, where he was set to speak for the first time as president, but that law enforcement had asked him and other administration officials to leave the premises.

National Condemnation of Political Violence

The attack triggered a wave of bipartisan condemnation. Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stated that “political violence has no place in our democracy,” while Senator Chris Coons called the event a “horrifying reminder that political violence has taken hold in this country.” Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whose husband was a victim of a 2022 assault, offered prayers for the injured officer. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham observed that the current era is “creating a stream of threats that are unprecedented against President Trump.” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also spoke out, declaring that “political violence is absolutely unacceptable.”

Reflections on a Unified Room

Trump offered a somber reflection on the evening’s intended purpose. “This was an event dedicated to freedom of speech that was supposed to bring together members of both parties with members of the press,” he said. He observed that the shared trauma of the shooting briefly bridged political divides. “And in a certain way, it did, because the fact that they just unified, I saw a room that was just totally unified. It was, in one way, very beautiful,” Trump remarked. WHCA President Weijia Jiang also praised the press corps, stating, “I saw all of you reporting, and that’s what we do.”

Security Concerns and Future Plans

This attack marks the third time Trump has been targeted by potential assassins in 2024. Former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe suggested the Secret Service should reassess its preparations, noting it is concerning the gunman got “pretty far beyond the perimeter.” When asked if he believed he was the intended target, Trump replied, “I guess.” He noted that the suspect’s motivations remain under investigation. “You know he’s in custody, and they’re asking him a lot of questions,” the president said. The White House intends to reschedule the dinner within 30 days, with Trump promising the new event will be “safer.”

The swift resolution of the security breach underscores the heightened state of vigilance surrounding the presidency. As federal agencies pivot from the immediate threat to a comprehensive criminal investigation, the focus remains on the resilience of democratic institutions in the face of political violence. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatile security landscape facing modern American leaders.
