Koforidua Zango marks 50 years, celebrates legacy and future aspirations

The Koforidua Zango Community has launched its 50th anniversary celebration in Koforidua to tell their story to the world. The yearlong celebration on the theme: “Using the past and current experiences to shape the future” will be used to highlight their achievements and the way forward for the community.

Koforidua Zango is a vibrant, cosmopolitan settlement within the Eastern Regional capital, established primarily by Northern Ghanaian and Sahelian Muslim migrants as a commercial, trading traveler’s camp. Growing significantly in its economic activities, it can now boast in diverse ethnic groups with 44 distinct tribal chiefs, existing as a unique Muslim cultural enclave.

The genesis of the Koforidua Zango community cannot be told without mentioning the former Eastern Regional Commissioner, Colonel George Minyilla whose sweat and toil led to their resettlement in 1976.

Koforidua Zango is the best Zango community in the country with proper demarcation and layout for free movement of persons, vehicle and economic activities.

Addressing the media during the launch of the event in Koforidua, the Planning Committee Chairman, Ibrahim Mohammed said the community for the past 50 years has gain notable achievements in terms of education and health, adding that the perception that Zango community youth do not like education is now becoming a thing of the past.

He said they will use the anniversary to take stock and strategize to position Koforidua Zango to its appreciable level. He therefore called on all members home and abroad to support the anniversary to make it memorable.

An opinion leader, Alhaji Abdul Razark Kahilani described Koforidua Zango as a beautiful place of haven and unity. He eulogized the former Eastern Regional Commissioner, Colonel George Minyilla for his tireless effort for their resettlement.

He urged all the Koforidua Zango youth to reflect on the theme for the anniversary to help move the community forward.

Series of activities including Quranic recitation, clean up exercise, fun games, health walk and screening, amongst others have been line up for the celebration.
