Over Six hundred residents of Nanton district of the Northern Region have been rendered homeless by a heavy rainstorm that hit the town on Tuesday evening.
The rainstorm ripped off roofs of about seventy houses, four public schools and one church. Some of the roofs of the house were completely ripped off, while other buildings collapsed. Books and other teaching materials of the four public schools were totally destroyed by the rainstorm.
A resident Abukari Issah in an interview with Ghanaian Times lamented that his five rooms were completely razed down. Another victim Inusah Allasan said the rainstorm caused serious havoc to his house and indicated that nothing was left to be salvaged.
The District Chief Executive for Nanton, Abukari Harti Rahman, who was traumatized about the level of destruction, sympathized with the victims. He gave the assurance the assembly will liaise with government to bring them some relief items soon.
Mr Rahman, therefore, directed the district officials of the National Disaster Management Organization to quickly assess the situation and come out with accurate data.
The DCE indicated that the impact of the rainstorm is beyond the means of the assembly and appealed to philanthropists and international bodies to come to the aid of the victims.
