The Paramount Chief of the Nungua Traditional Council, Nii Odaifio Wenlentsi, has added his voice to calls for peace in the December polls while urging chiefs to lead in preaching peace to their subjects.

At the first meeting of the Council this year, Nii Odaifio Wenlensti, noted that Chiefs must show discipline so their subjects can follow suit. Although the meeting did not state the offense of the said chiefs, Nii Odaifio Wenlentsi was heavy on ensuring discipline among chiefs.

According to him, they have a major role to play in ensuring peace as the elections draw closer, adding that political parties must also be decorous in their speeches. He added that Chiefs who do otherwise will be dealt with. Already, some sub-chiefs who have been cited for indiscipline have been referred to the Paramountcy’s ethics Committee for further investigations.

Nii Odaifio Wenlentsi indicated that Ghanaians will have nowhere to run should there be any election-related conflict or war. He entreated the chiefs to use their roles in advising their children, grandchildren, and family members not to allow themselves to be used to create any violence.

“Tell your family members that the 2024 election is not a period of war. It is a period of decision making. Nothing more, nothing less. I’m begging you in the name of God. Personally, I don’t think I can run if anything should happen. I cannot run. So just have mercy on me and don’t create any problems that force me to run. I will not survive it,” Nii Odaifio Wenlentsi noted.

Present was the Regent of Katamanso, who was a former Greater Accra regional minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo. He asked politicians to be unbiased.

He indicated that politicians must come to the realisation that there is no room for biases and party interests when they take over the reins of government. Rather, they must be seen to love and treat everyone equally.

He noted, “no one gets into any political position in this world through an exam. You are voted for. It is by the mandate and will of the people. By natural law and by the constitution, after the elections, you must be there for everybody. They need to look deep into themselves, reflect, and ensure that the will of the people prevails.”

The chiefs who were said to have been indisciplined were referred to the ethics committee for further investigations. The paramount chief will then take a final decision on their fate.
