The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), and Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), have expressed unhappiness over the clash between the police and rampaging youth at Nkoranza in the Bono East Region.

The clash, which was in protest of the death of Albert Donkor, a robbery suspect, led to the death of one person and injury of others.

A joint statement issued by the two bodies said many reports have questioned the professionalism of the Police.

“The leadership of the CCG and GCBC are saddened by the clash between the youth and the police at Nkoranza in the Bono East Region on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, which led to the death of one person with several others injured.”

“We have heard many reports in the media that have questioned the professionalism of the Police Service in such matters, and have taken note of similar examples taken place in recent past,” the statement signed on Wednesday, May 25, said.

The statement said the Faith-based Organisations will arrange a meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to make concerns of the citizens known.

It urged Ghanaians to have confidence in the rule of law and desist from lawlessness.

Background

The youth of Nkoranza on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, took to the streets of the town to protest the death of 27-year-old Albert Donkor, a trader. The youth suspect the police killed Donkor while he was in their custody and want justice. Wearing red armbands, the youth blocked some streets of the town, burnt used car tyres, as well as besieged the local police station where sources claim they vandalised some vehicles and other property to register their displeasure at the incident.
