President Akufo-Addo has inaugurated a 15KW Solar Power Plant phase two project at Kaleo in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region.

The plant constructed by the Volta River Authority with support from the German Development Bank is expected to increase Ghana’s and VRA’s generation capacity and diversity by adding more renewable energy generation.

President Akufo-Addo said the inauguration of the facility will reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuel and help mitigate adverse effects of climate change.

The inauguration of the 15-kilowatt Kaleo Phase 2 solar power plant by the Volta River Authority brings the total capacity of Kaleo Plant to 28 megawatts.

The facility forms part of VRA’s efforts to diversify its generation portfolio by adding more renewable energy generation. Board Chairman of the VRA, Mr Kofi Tutu Agyare, said the VRA is poised to help the government achieve the national energy transition goal of installing 150 gigawatts of solar generation by 2060.

The Deputy Energy Minister, Mr Herbert Krapa, said the government is working around the clock to bring an end to the current power supply challenges facing the country within the next few days.

President Akufo Addo reaffirmed his government’s commitment to implementing policies and measures to encourage green investment, foster a culture of efficiency and prioritise the development of solar and wind for the growth of the energy sector. He added that this will contribute to making Ghana energy self-sufficient and set the stage for Ghana to emerge as an eco-friendly country in the region.

There were messages from the representatives of the German government, Spanish government, the European Union, and the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs.
