EPA declares Explosion stricken town, Apiatse in the Western region, Pollution Free

The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, says Appiatse, in the Western Region, where an explosion of ammonium nitrate fuel oil occurred, is safe from all forms of pollution. Per the result of the latest assessment, the area is deemed safe for reconstruction and habitation. The Acting Director responsible for Environmental Quality issues at the EPA, Emmanuel Appoh, said the latest environmental assessment conducted in the community and its environs showed that the air, soil and water quality are safe.

Mr Appoh said the concentration of ammonia and nitrate analyzed from air filters during the initial assessment were more than three hundred per cent higher than the WHO recommended limits for rural and urban areas.  He noted that the situation at the time of explosion was aggravated by the harmattan and crater at the site of explosion, according to the GNA.

Also, the Ammonia and nitrate concentrations analyzed in water bodies and the soil were also within acceptable levels.
