Government is to train Geriatric doctors to attend to the aged in Ghana like what pertains in the developed countries.

The move which is the initiative of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, is being assisted by the Health Ministry to help improve the living conditions of the aged and increase their life span.

The Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Gifty Twum Ampofo, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with a GBC’s correspondent at Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region. She said the Ministry has also gone through the Aged Bill and it is left with Parliament to enact the law.

Madam Twum Ampofo disclosed that the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) scheme, which catered for 213,000 households three years ago, rose to 254,000 last year.

Madam Twum Ampofo who is also the MP for Abuakwa North Constituency, said government has left no stone unturned in prioritising the interest of the citizenry.

It has therefore put in place a number of interventions including free SHS, double track system, One District One Factory, NaBCO, Payment of Nurses allowances, Recruitment of Paramedical staff and increase in LEAP.

Madam Twum Ampofo asked Ghanaians to use these successes chalked up by the government during its two years in office and refrain from raising criticisms without delving into the cause of the challenges confronting the nation.

She attributed the delay in the implementation of some of the good policies to the ailing economy inherited and urged the citizens to exercise restraint since the government intends to help create wealth for the people and alleviate poverty.
