The UN Resident Coordinator, Sylvia Ekra Lopez says more than 821 million people in the world are under-nourished with severe food insecurity and undernourishment increasing in almost all regions in Africa.

Speaking at an event in Accra to mark the 39th Observance of World Food Day, the UN Resident Coordinator said that the cost of hunger is one of the heaviest cost a society can pay as there is a direct correlation between hunger, human development, and socio-economic development and transformation.

She noted, that four years into the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, hunger is still on the rise globally with more people hungry today than they were ten years ago.

To stop the cycle of poverty caused by hunger and malnutrition, she said world leaders need to address all forms of hunger and malnutrition by ensuring that people especially children have sufficient and nutritious food.

The UN Resident Coordinator stressed on the need to eliminate hunger and achieve a zero hunger world.

The 2019 World Food Day was organised under the theme “Our Actions Are Our Future. Healthy Diets for A #ZeroHunger World” and was held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.
