The Electrical Wiring Cables and Accessories Regulations (LI2478) has been passed by Parliament.

The new regulation aims to ensure strict adherence to regulatory requirements by electrical contractors and enhance safety standards across the industry.

A total of 752 individuals have recently been certified as Electrical Wiring Professionals by the Energy Commission after comprehensive training sessions.

This brings the Certified Electrical Professionals and Inspectors across the country to 15,544 since the inception of the program.

The success of the recent certification training underscores the Energy Commission’s commitment to upholding industry standards and fostering excellence within the field.

The theme for this year’s certification program; “Ensuring the Safety of Life and Property through the Promotion of Standardized Cables and Accessories,” aligns perfectly with the newly enacted Electrical Wiring Cables and Accessories Regulations (LI2478).

The regulations aimed at ensuring heightened electro-vigilance throughout the industry. At the graduation ceremony, the Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Rev. Oscar Amonoo-Neizer, emphasised the importance of the new regulation in promoting standards.

“The electrical wiring cables and accessories regulation LI2478 has been passed into law by the parliament of Ghana and will soon be available on the commission’s website. The use of quality approved materials is essential to ensuring the integrity and reliability of electrical systems, thereby safeguarding lives and properties from potential hazards such as electrical fires, shocks and equipment failings,” Mr. Amonoo added.

The Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority, Prof. Alex Dodoo, said the Authority will continue to collaborate with the Energy Commission to effectively implement the new regulation to enhance safety measures within the electrical sector.

He said, “the Ghana Standard Authority pledges that , we shall continue to work very closely with the energy commission in the enforcement of LI2478 and we shall work together to ensure that the building and construction industry is protected. There will be increased market surveillance.”

A representative from the Energy Ministry, Mr. Sulemana Abubakar, cautioned Certified Electricians against overcharging their clients, saying they should be fair and transparent in their operations.

“The Ministry of Energy since 2012 made it mandatory for its contractor under the national electrification scheme and the self-help electrification program, which is popularly known as the SHEP to engage only CEWPs or CEWIs for certification of household wiring to the connection of consumers to the national electricity grid.”

Mr. Atteh Adamptey was awarded the Overall Best trainee. He received a cash prize of five thousand Cedis, electrical cables and appliances.

Juliana Madey took the Best Female Trainee Award.
