In Ghana, the general notion about betting is that it is a game for boys. However, some girls are breaking this status quo.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show, the Student Representative Council (SRC) President of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA, Majesty E.K. Ofori has disclosed that some ladies have resorted to betting due to economic hardship.
“Some of the ladies engage in betting to some extent even though they may not know how to arrange the odds and other technicalities involved. They bet on the football teams and basketball”, he said.
He added that betting has become a school where people are taught how to bet.
“It is a whole school on its own that someone takes up to teach people how to bet”, he added.
Betting has been in the news in recent times over the government’s decision to impose a 10% tax on earnings from lotteries, games of chance, and sports betting at the point of payout, meaning a reduction in their income.
The government’s decision did not go down well with the majority of youth. This is because betting has become a source of income for them. Therefore, taxing betting means a reduction in their income.
