A Shop Manager of an electrical appliances company at the West Hills Mall in Accra Boafo Osei Kwame has been remanded after he allegedly used a taser to shock a 33-year-old man Shadrack Allu leading to his death.
He has been arraigned before the District Court at Sowutuom and will reappear on February 16, 2023.
The accused is on a provisional charge of murder and his plea is yet to be taken.
The facts presented before the court indicate that last Monday January 30, a Police officer detailed at the West Hills Mall, Sergeant Daniel Abeiku was patrolling the area when he saw the deceased and one Ibrahim Seshi with a backpack.
The Prosecution said the movement of the two persons was suspicious so the policeman called the deceased to conduct a search in his backpack. The prosecution said the deceased allegedly opened the backpack and removed something wrapped in a black polythene into his back pocket and started running outside.
The Policeman is said to have pursued the deceased and arrested him. The deceased allegedly struggled with the policeman when he was handcuffed and removed the wrapped polythene bag from his back pocket and swallowed it.
The accused Shop Manager who witnessed the incident rushed to the scene and removed his personal taser and shocked the deceased. According to the facts, the deceased fell unconscious and was rushed to a hospital within the Mall, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Counsel for the accused disputed the facts presented before the court contending that the case bothers on causation which cannot be attributed to his client.
The Defence also indicated that a post-mortem will make things clearer for their client as the facts suggest that the deceased struggled with a certain Policeman as well as swallowing a black polythene bag. The Defence argued further that the said taser allegedly used on the deceased was not even working when tried on the accused later after his arrest.
The Prosecution however indicated there were no marks of assault during an inspection on the body of the deceased.
