Dermatologist and founder of Skin Foundation Africa, Dr. Ansah Brifo, has warned that poor makeup hygiene may be behind the increasing cases of facial itching, especially around the eyes.

Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on Monday April 27, 2026, Dr. Brifo explained that a parasite known as Demodex mite can infest the skin and trigger discomfort when makeup tools are not properly cleaned or are shared among users.

“Demodex mites are found in makeup brushes and can cause severe itching around the eyes,” he said.

He noted that the mites are commonly present in unclean makeup brushes and can easily spread when individuals use other people’s cosmetic tools, a habit she described as risky and often overlooked.

According to him, the condition may start as mild itching but can worsen over time, particularly around sensitive areas like the eyes, making it both uncomfortable and difficult to manage if ignored.

“We shouldn’t be in the habit of using other people’s makeup brushes, and we must wash our brushes regularly. It’s very important,” he added.

Dr. Brifo further cautioned against the misuse of steroid creams, which many people turn to for quick relief without proper medical advice.

He explained that prolonged use of such treatments can lead to skin complications, including pigmentation and other long-term effects that may be harder to treat.

“Once we start using steroids over time, they can cause pigmentation and other skin problems,” he said.

He urged the public to pay closer attention to skincare hygiene and seek professional help when symptoms persist, stressing that prevention through proper habits remains the most effective approach.
