The Ministry of Energy has revealed that it will take several months to fully rebuild the damaged Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) Akosombo Substation after a major fire destroyed important parts of the facility.
The substation, which plays a key role in Ghana’s electricity transmission system, caught fire on April 23, 2026, leading to serious power supply disruptions in many parts of the country.
The incident has raised concerns about the strength of Ghana’s energy infrastructure and how long it will take to restore normal operations.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, April 27, 2026, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, said the damage was severe, especially to the control systems used to distribute power from the Akosombo Dam.
He explained that rebuilding the facility would not be completed quickly because the control room was badly affected by the fire.
“The whole control room has to be rebuilt and it will not take a day or two. It will take a number of months to be able to do that, and so what needs to be immediately done is finding ways to restore power and restore our lives back to normalcy,” he said.
Richmond Rockson added that authorities are currently working on temporary measures to reduce the impact of the outage. These include rerouting power supply and using alternative power generation sources where possible.
The Ministry says the delay in rebuilding the substation could affect businesses and industries that depend heavily on stable electricity supply.
