The Minister for Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, has set up a committee to investigate a major fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company substation at Akosombo.
Describing the incident as “severe and disastrous,” the Minister said the scale of destruction has raised serious concerns about infrastructure safety and the stability of power supply in the country.
The fire broke out on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at about 2:05 p.m., according to the Ghana National Fire Service. In response, firefighters from several nearby stations, including Akosombo, Akuse, Somanya, Kpong, and Peki, were deployed to the scene.
A total of 64 personnel, supported by three fire tenders, worked together to bring the situation under control. The fire was confined within 48 minutes, brought under control by 6:51 p.m., and completely extinguished by 7:00 p.m.
Following an inspection of the facility, Mr. Jinapor noted that although minor explosions can sometimes occur at such installations, the size and impact of this fire were unusual.
He announced that a seven-member committee has been tasked to investigate the cause of the fire and submit a report within two weeks. The Minister urged the committee to work quickly and thoroughly to establish the exact cause of the incident.
Despite the damage, Mr. Jinapor assured the public that efforts are underway to restore electricity to affected areas. He said technical teams have already been mobilised and are working to restore power within 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, has also visited the site to assess the damage and support ongoing response efforts.
