The Minority in Parliament has asked President Akufo-Addo to release the Justice Emile Short Commission report before the passage of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill into Law.

Library file: On Thursday, March 14, 2019, President Akufo-Addo received report on incidents of violence that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election from Emile Short Commission of Inquiry.

At a news briefing, the Minority said the content of the report will help them in their deliberations on the Bill.

Ranking Member on the Defense and Interior Committee, James Agalga who addressed the media said passing such a bill without recourse to the recommendations of the Short Commission Report will result in the enactment of a half-baked law not capable of dealing with the menace of politically related violence.

Deputy Minority Chief Whip Ahmed Ibrahim said the concerns of the Minority must be taken seriously.

According to him, the law must deal with the issues holistically including vigilantes who have already been drafted into the regular National Security agencies.

He disclosed for instance that in his constituency, some known party activists have been made heads of sensitive security agencies, a situation he described as worrying.

Meanwhile, the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs which deliberated on the Bill is expected to present its report to the house for consideration and subsequent passage. It is not yet clear if the minority MPs will take part in that process in view of their current stance. When quizzed, the MPs were tight-lipped on their intentions.
