The Minister for Education , Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to immediately withdraw controversial letters issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025, regarding post-retirement contracts for academic senior members in public universities.
The decision follows a high-level meeting between the minister and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), amid growing concerns within the academic community over the implications of the directive.
According to a statement signed by the Minister’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the move is intended to pave the way for broader consultations with key stakeholders before any final policy decision is taken.
The Ministry emphasised that the withdrawal is temporary and forms part of efforts to ensure that any future policy direction reflects a broad-based consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and safeguards the long-term interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
The statement further reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and stakeholder engagement in addressing critical issues affecting higher education in the country.
The development is expected to ease tensions within academia as stakeholders anticipate further dialogue on the future of post-retirement engagements in Ghana’s public universities.
