The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a fire outbreak at the Kumasi New Kejetia Market, preventing what could have escalated into a major disaster.

The incident occurred at shop F2230 on the first floor of the market. A team of nine firefighters, led by Station Officer I Maxwell Partey, arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the distress call and encountered thick smoke billowing from the shop.

Firefighters swiftly brought the situation under control using portable fire extinguishers and water from the facility’s hose reel system. The blaze was contained at 8:48 a.m. and completely extinguished by 9:00 a.m.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fire was caused by the spontaneous ignition of flammable materials that had been poorly stored under inadequate ventilation.

Items affected included approximately 250 boxes of matches, nail polish chemicals, and 10 deodorants, all of which sustained partial smoke damage.

The rapid intervention by the GNFS, prevented the fire from spreading to more than 30 adjoining shops, safeguarding goods worth millions of cedis. Firefighters also managed to salvage several items from the affected shop.

No injuries or fatalities were recorded. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
