Tanger Med port in northern Morocco is expected to be the largest container port in the Mediterranean, project leader Hassan Abkari told Xinhua.

As its second terminal was put into operation in late June, the port is designed to increase the maximum annual capacity by 6 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units). The second-phase project cost 1.3 billion euros (1.48 billion U.S. dollars), according to port officials.

In 2018, the containing capacity of the port has reached about 3.5 million TEUs and became the biggest port in Africa.

Tanger Med is expected to raise the actual annual capacity to 900 TEUs and exceed Valencia Port on Spain’s southeastern coast by 2025 or 2028, to be the biggest container port in the Mediterranean, Abkari said.

Tanger Med, near the Strait of Gibraltar, has connected Morocco to 77 countries and 186 ports and attracted more than 900 enterprises.
