Vice President Bawumia hosted cured lepers at his residence

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia today hosted cured lepers from the Weija, Ankaful and Ho Leprosariums and some street kids at his residence. The gesture is to build the spirit of togetherness and make them feel welcomed.

Vice President Bawumia said the government has the well-being of the vulnerable at heart and will, therefore, continue to initiate policies that will bring relief to them. He gave the assurance that the shelter for street children will soon materialize to ensure that these street kids have a roof over their heads.

People affected by leprosy even when cured are normally stigmatized and therefore find it difficult to interact freely with the public. The associated physical deformities with the disease also tend to impede their ability to relate to the public. It is for these reasons that the Vice President for two years, voluntarily offered himself as a patron of the Lepers Society to assist them and also show others that they are cured and harmless.

This is the second time the Vice President has hosted the cured lepers and street kids from the Soup Kitchen. The guests who thronged the Vice President’s residence were excited by the kind gesture. Vice President Bawumia urged the public to show love to their neighbors. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the needy in society.

The Chairman of the Lepers Aid Committee Rev. Father Andrew Cambell said although there about 31 new cases of leprosy in Ghana, the disease has gone down completely. He expressed worry about the way and manner families of the lepers and the society at large shun lepers even when they are completely cured.

He urged the public to embrace and show them, love, while they are alive. The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Adjei Sowah in a brief message said his outfit is collaborating with other Assemblies in Accra to identify organisations that assist the less privileged and to channel more resources to sustain their work. He pledged to give out his 1st salary this year to support the Leprosarium.

The Vice President, his wife Samira Bawumia, the MP for La Dadekotopon, Vincent Sowah Odotei and other dignitaries served the guests amid music and dancing.

Others present include, the Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay, the General Secretary, John Boadu and the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye.
