GFA appoints five-member search committee to hire next Black Stars coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a roadmap to hire the next Black Stars coach a day after coach Chris Highton was relieved of his duties as coach of the Black Stars after an abysmal performance in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast.

As part of the roadmap which was published on the GFA Website, a five-member Search Committee has been named to evaluate and recommend a suitable candidate to the Executive Council for approval within three weeks.

The Search Committee will be chaired by the Vice President of the GFA, Mr. Mark Addo.

A Legal Practitioner and law lecturer, Mr. Ace Ankomah (Esq.) will act as Vice Chairman of the committee while the Director of Coaching Education of the GFA, Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah, Ghana Football legend, Opoku Nti, and Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, William Caesar Kartey will serve as members.

The FA also revealed an abridged criteria for the selection of the next Black Stars coach which includes.

  1. The potential Head Coach should be a proven winner in coaching Top Men’s National Team or Club Football
  2. Must have a football philosophy that aligns or compliments our DNA
  3. Must hold the highest football license in the world with over 15 years coaching experience
  4. Proven track record in team reconstruction, organization, and development of young talent.
  5. Proven disciplinarian, tactician and leadership skills

Former Coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton was relieved of his duties as coach of the Black Stars on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.

He first joined the GFA as a technical advisor in 2022, In March 2023 he was appointed head coach of the Black Stars where he took charge of 12 games, losing 4 drawing 4, and winning 4.
