Telecommunication giant, MTN Ghana, has begun implementing its announced upward price adjustments across all its products and services.

In a circular issued to customers, MTN said the new prices kicked off today. The surge in price affects calls, SMS, data and other offerings of MTN.

MTN Ghana, categorised as a Significant Market Power by the National Communications Authority, has attributed the upward adjustment to rising operational costs.

However, subscribers of MTN Data and other services say the prices are killing them. The cry by Ghanaians follows a sharp review in data prices by the leading data and mobile network service provider.

This morning, telecommunication giant MTN increased data prices from GHC399 for 192GB to GHC 350 for 92GB, slashing data received by more than half. This is the second time MTN is increasing its data prices this year after a 15 percent increase in voice and mobile data prices in February citing rising operational cost.

Vodafone on the other hand increased data prices a month ago from 400 cedis for 229 Giga Byte to 190 Giga Byte. While some consumers accuse the telcos of being insensitive, especially, in the current economic crisis, others blame the Ministry of Communication and National Communication Authority for forcefully classifying MTN as a Significant Market Power, to stifle its operation.

Today’s increases have once again triggered conversations about the high cost of data in the country. Radio Ghana has been speaking to consumers on the increases.
