Two passenger trains crashed head-on in Denmark Thursday morning, injuring at least 17 people, of whom five were in critical condition, police and media reported.
The area was sealed off by police. Images from the scene revealed the front ends of both trains smashed, although both remained upright on the tracks.
The collision occurred at 6:30 am on a local rail line between Hillerød and Kagerup, approximately 35 kilometres north of the capital Copenhagen.
A police statement called it “a serious accident” but a police spokesman told AFP that all passengers had been evacuated from the trains.
“Two trains collided and the police and emergency services are mobilised in large numbers,” the statement said.
Gribskov mayor Trine Egetved wrote in a Facebook post that the local rail line is used by many Gribskov residents, employees and schoolchildren.
“At the moment, it says that there are many injured, some of which are critical, and they have been flown to the National Hospital,” she added.
