Governance Expert Professor Emmanuel Asiamah says the Auditor General (AG) role should not be usurped, manipulated or put the office under any pressure.

This is because the powers of the office are guaranteed under Article 187 of the constitution.

The comment by Prof. Emmanuel Asiamah follows seeming friction between the Auditor General Daniel Dormelevo and the Board Chairman of the Audit Service, Prof. Edward Dua Agyeman.

The Auditor General petitioned President Akufo-Addo and requested him to intervene in what he described as unlawful interference by the Board Chairman, accusing him of manipulating procurement processes among  others.

Auditor General Daniel Domelevo

Mr. Dormelevo alleged that the Board Chairman in one instance wrote to the Public  Procurement Authority  for approval to do restrictive tendering, without the knowledge of the Auditor General.

President Akufo Addo has already launched a probe into the allegations.

Speaking to GBC’s Ibrahim Kwarteng on the issue, Prof. Asiamah said the Board Chairman is required to shape progress of the organisation and not be seen to be interfering in the work of the Auditor General.

Meanwhile, Co-Chair of Citizens Movement Against Corruption, an NGO, Edem Senanu has asked that the mandate of the Auditor General be protected.

He said although he does not smell corruption, the actions of the Board Chair are clear breaches of laid down process.
