Women form the majority of Ghana’s population. However, their representation in the political space, has continuously remained low. Out of the 18,510 hopefuls who filed for the upcoming district assembly elections, only 909 are women.
Speaking to the subject on GBC’s current affairs programme, ‘Talking Point’, Director of Ghanaian Women’s Empowerment Network, Rev. Dr. Suzzane Nti said a lot of lip service is paid where gender equality and affirmative action laws are concerned.
She said though there are statutory provisions, there are still teething challenges about the mentality and mindset society has about women exists which must change before progress can be made.
Dean of Studies and Research, Institute of Local Government Studies, Frederick Agyarko Oduro said women are more suitable to handle social issues at the grassroots, therefore, they can perform efficiently if given local governance positions.
A Legal Practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini said if women are given opportunities, corruption will be brought to the barest minimum.
He noted that there is empirical evidence that women are experts due to their nurturing nature. Mr Anyenini encouraged the public to continue to campaign for women because they are more competent.
