The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has agreed to expand the Premier League to a permanent 18-team league following a decision at congress to accept the new format.
The endorsement at its congress at Prampram yesterday (December 19) gave way for three clubs to face relegation at the end of the league season contrary to what was agreed at an Extraordinary Congress of the association held in Accra last October.
It was agreed at the GFA’s Extraordinary Congress that the FA adopted an 18-team league in order to have Accra Great Olympics and King Faisal back in the top flight to put an end to a protracted litigation by the two clubs over their relegation from the top flight.
3 Clubs for relegation
It had been proposed that the expanded 18-club Premier League would see five clubs being relegated at the end of the season, while three clubs get promoted from second-tier league to restore the original 16-club Premier League.
However, the GFA President, Mr Kurt Okraku announced yesterday that his administration had opted for a permanent 18-club league to replace the existing 16-club competition beginning December 28 when the 2019/20 season commences.
“We are looking forward to vote to either accept or reject a proposal to have a permanent 18-club league.
“An agreement to this will mean that there will be three clubs exiting the league at the end of the season instead of an initial five clubs facing relegation at the last agreement,” Mr Okraku said
In voting on the amendment, 77 delegates endorsed the new format to give way to an expanded Premier League beginning this season.
Mr Okraku announced that the victory result represented a majority decision which meant it had been by the Congress.
