President Akufo-Addo determined to address loopholes in justice delivery system

President Akufo-Addo says government is determined to address the legislative and policy loopholes in the justice delivery system to promote the rights of all Ghanaians.

Speaking at the 10th Anniversary dinner and awards of ”The Justice for All Programme,” the President appealed for support to sustain the programme, saying every Ghanaian can possibly be exposed to injustice.

He noted that the survival of the programme is not limited to those in prison but for all Ghanaians.

The ‘Justice For All Programme’ initiated in 2007 has seen the reduction of the prison population by 33%. It has also eased the burden on the regular courts.

Despite the successes chalked up, it is estimated that there are still about 12% of remand prisoners. This, the President wants it further reduced.

President Akufo-Addo, who is a known advocate of human rights called for the sustenance of the programme.

He said Ghana by the Justice for All programme is showing leadership on the continent as some African countries are under studying the programme.

He commended the MP for Esikado and former Attorney General Joe Ghartey for initiating the programme. He also commended past and present IGPs and Chief Justices for their contributions in making the programme a success.

He gave the assurance that no Ghanaian will be denied speedy access to justice.

Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo

The Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo commended lawyers for taking cases of remand prisoners on pro bono but warned others taking undue advantage to gain cheap popularity.

GTVs Barbara Kuma and others received award for their invaluable contributions towards the sustenance and growth of the programme.
