The Centre for Maritime law and security has cautioned government over not securing Ghana’s maritime borders. According to the Centre, resources in the ocean stand to be a major source of conflict among nations in the coming years and behooves Ghana to safe guard its allocations.
It cautions a year after Ghana won a maritime dispute against Cote d’voire. Cote d’voire was claiming it had rights to the area where Ghana had been undertaking some hydrocarbon activities and was demanding a compensation from Ghana at the International Tribunal in the Law of the seas.
Although Ghana won, a loss could have had dire implications on Ghana’s oil proceeds as the major oil field, Tweneboa, Enyira and Ntome would have been host to Cote d’voire.
The Executive Director of the Centre for maritime law and security, Dr Kamal-Deen Ali at sensitization forum for key stateholders of the ministry of foreign affairs and Regional Integration said maritime security is of a necessity as the fisheries,oil and gas, naval dominion and transportation by sea impact heavily on the economic supremacy of a nation.
